"A company founded on ice cream but built around families."
The first Friendly's Ice Cream Shop was opened in Springfield, MA in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression. Twenty year old Prestley and 18 year old Curtis Blake open a neighborhood ice cream shoppe with double-dip cones for 5 cents. The young entrepreneurs name the business "Friendly" with the intention of providing warm, caring, neighborly service.
Friendly's manufactures a a wide variety of ice cream flavors and specialty products at its plant in Wilbraham, MA. Their ice cream is sold in supermarkets and at their ice cream parlors throughout the east. Over the years they have come up with a number of signature items such as: the Fribble shake, Jim Dandy - a 5 scoop ice cream sundae, Friend-z - soft serve vanilla ice cream with mixed in toppings, Monster Mash a popular sundae with children, and the Vol-cone-O peanut butter and hot fudge ice cream cone.
The Agawam Friendly's has a very popular take-out window. On hot summer evenings the lines can be long, especially after little league games.
