When the city was incorporated in 1973 it combined the towns of Dragerton and Columbia but the inhabitants of Columbia still cling to the old name.

Coal mining is the major industry of the area evidenced by the large tailings pile situated just below the city to the south. The coal deposits are the largest coking coal deposits in the west.
