The province of Pattani lies ~1000kms south of Bangkok on the eastern side of the long Malay Peninsular. The provincial bus station is found on the eastern edge of the provincial capital, also named Pattani. To me this station looks new. In design it is the standard, functional, Thai provincial bus station style: ticket area in front, a central rectangular, open, covered waiting area with bus bays around, at the far end food and drink on sale. It lacks the vibrant hustle and bustle of older stations located in the city centre. It is constructed from metal rather than stone (cement, brick, concrete), and looks clean and neat.

There are a few motor cycle drivers and tuk tuks at the station to convey you into town. 50 baht on a bike for such a service is a fair price. This station handles traffic to Bangkok and to the more distant provinces along the way. Transport within the province and to the immediately adjacent provinces originates at the city centre. There are several streets and several small agencies which handle this, or simply hop on a bus as it passes.

Pattani is one of the four provinces of Thailand with a Muslim majority. Something you will notice when you arrive, lots of head scarves and Muslim dress. Pattani receives few visitors, a dearth of tourism activities and terrorisim (see below).

ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people (out of a pop. of 1.6 million) have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
