Salina is a multi-purpose town. In addition to the salt deposits north of town, there are abundant coal deposits east of town. Agriculture makes up a large part of the economy of the community.

Salina has the distinction of being situated at one end (western) of the most isolated section of Interstate Highway in the nation. There are no services for travelers for 110 miles until you reach Green River.
