Nevada gets its nickname "The Silver State" from the copious amounts of silver extracted mainly from the Comstock Lode at Virginia City and from other silver workings across the state.

Since Nevada was the first state to have state-wide legalized gambling, it has spawned three major international gambling destinations: Las Vegas, Reno, and Laughlin. Laughlin has also had the additional draw of the recreational opportunities on Lake Mohave and the Colorado River, even before any gambling establishments opened in the mid-1960s.
