This statue depicts a prominent local, Phatthalung figure, Phraya (royal title) Thukkharat. There is little information, in English at least, about this man's life. All that I could readily find does no more than complement what is printed on the information sign at the statue site (in gallery). Between 1785–6 the Burmese King sent nine armies to attack different regions of Siam (as Thailand was then known). The governor of Phatthalung decided that discretion was the better part of valour and left the scene. A monk, the subject of this statue, then decided that he should lead the resistance to the Burmese, which he successfully did.

The statue is situated on the main road leading from the small town of Phatthalung, capital of the province of the same name in far southern Thailand. The statue and its grounds are a rather elaborate affair. The statue itself depicts the gentleman in traditional Thai dress, holding in his right hand a rather serious sword. The statue stands on a plinth with a biography, which in turn sits on a dais. Bas re-reif on the dais show events from his life.
