Phatthalung is one of the many smaller towns and provinces of Thailand that tourists never visit on their whirlwind tours through 'Unseen Thailand'. The reason for this absence is that, as even the most ardent local patriot would admit, there are few tourist attractions in the region. Having said that it is a pleasant and relaxing locale, but with only a handful of hotels.
Linking the town to the wider world is the Phatthalung train station. In design it follows the standard design of Thai stations. The main entrance fronts a main street, outside of which are the usual retinue of tuk tuks and 'motor cycle taxi drivers', ready and willing (discuss the fee first) to convey you around the town. Upon entry you will see a small ticket office, walking further you will reach the train tracks and the external covered waiting area. One difference with the northern Thai stations is that this is constructed from brick (stone, cement?) rather than wood.
Phatthalung station is on the eastern side of the town, it is also the main station in the province, and is on the southern train route between Bangkok and the Malaysian border.
If you happen to be a 'farang' (a westerner) expect to create a minor flurry of surprise as you walk into the station. Few, very, tourists reach this spot.
