Phatthalung is a small province, with a capital city of the same name, in far southern Thailand, ~800kms from the bustling dynamo of the metropolis of Bangkok. The principal business of the province is agriculture, largely rice cultivation. Phatthalung is not known as a major tourist destination. The provincial bus station, linking this small province to the outside world, and the capital city to the villages within the province, is located a few kilometres to the north of the town. In the town I noticed the not uncommon practice of the existence of several larger bus stops, where inter-provincial buses stop to taken on and off passengers, complementing the actual bus station outside the town.
In design the station follows the 'standard' Thai model. A long, rectangular, open waiting area, with bus bays around. At one end ticket counters, at the other toilets, and food and drink on sale. It is a rather large station with 20 bus bays. It also looks relatively new. When I visited on a mid-week midday the station was near deserted, with the few staff sleeping at their desks (sensible). I was told that the station comes alive at night when the big buses from Bangkok pass through.
