I will confess to be a little doubtful about this, but there is a sign, and there is a tree.
The sign reads (the English part of it at least):
"The First Para Rubber Tree of Thailand"
The rubber tree was introduced to Thailand by a Thai/Chinese capitalist and government official Ratsadanupradit Mahison Phakdi (Korsimbee) in the year 1899. Three generations of his extended family were movers and shakers in southern Thailand during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The crop quickly grew in importance. Today Thailand is still the second largest producer of rubber, after Indonesia.
This site apparently is the location of the first rubber tree in Thailand. It is not an unreasonable assertion. Trang was the fiefdom of Korsimbee, and it was where he began his and his families' rubber empire, however, how long do these trees survive? If this is the correct site, than this particular tree is most likely the great, great grandson of the original. A spiritual connection.
The tree is located in the town of Kan Tang, in the province of Trang, ~30kms west of the provincial capital of Trang city. Formerly, this was the provincial capital town.
As for additional information, there is little English language info online about this gentleman or his family, regrettably. Interesting lives.
