The plaque reads:
"I AM DENVER CITY"
While he diplomatically named the town for Territorial Governor James Denver, General Wm. H. Larimer named its major street for himself. It survived fires, floods and explosive growth. The hotels, banks, stores and amusements of the granite-lined thoroughfare were a barometer of the regional boom.
The bust that began with the 1893 silver crash and continued into the depression and beyond. Elegant Larimer Street became skidrow, home to depleted miners, busted sodbusters and worn-out cowboys and Indians.
As Denver moved "uptown," tolerant Larimer Street became a magnet for immigrants - Mexican, Japanese, African, German, Irish, Italian and Jewish. Urban renewal in the 1970's erased much of the brick and sandstone in Larimer Street's history, but today the rejuvenated street again measures Denver's urban renaissance.
