The Fitzwilliam-Wentworth family lived in a nearby large stately home and owned much of the land around including much of the village. Their family dated back to the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066.

This old church was superseded by a new one across the road in 1877 .At the time the new church was built the then Earl and Countess Fitzwilliam had 15 children and needed a larger church. The family had their own seating area in the church, and wanted a new arrangement.

They were wealthy enough that rather than extending the original church they built a completely new one and dedicated it to the memory of their parents.

In 1893 the bells were removed from this church and moved into the bell tower of the new church.

The church was left derelict but then in 1925 the chancel and chapel were restored for William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, 7th Earl Fitwilliam. The top portion of the tower of the church fell during a gale in 1962 and then the church was made redundant in 12th February 1975 and was placed into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is also a Grade II listed building, and remains a consecrated building.

Although most of the church is now derelict the chancel was saved because it contains memorials of the Wentworth-Fitzwilliam family.

The chancel is usually locked but can be visited on Spring Bank Holiday Weekend and other dates by arrangement with the conservation trust.
