This grotesque, see photo, sits high on a rooftop in Woolwich. It is not clear what the carving represents but scholars of Sheakespeare may know. The character seems to have a human face and hands, very big ears and claws on its feet. Why Shakespeare? The building used to be a public house called "Shakespeare". Beneath the carving a carved bust of Shakespeare can be seen.
The building was built in 1900.
