August and Mabel Nelson built this Victorian house in 1909 on land given them by Mabel's parents, James and Annie Jensen. Six days after they were married in 1906, August left for an LDS mission for two-and-one-half years and gave his new wife the bankbook. While he was gone, Mabel supported herself and her missionary husband by teaching school. When he returned, she gave him the bankbook untouched and used the money to build this house. They had three daughters and four sons, all born at home. August and Mabel lived here until their deaths in November 1944, and January 1948, respectively.
August built over 40 houses in Sandy and served on the Sandy City Council. He appeared to favor brick, often yellow, as a primary building material. As a group, his designs represent a local builder's transition from Victorian house types to twentieth-century bungalows. The floor plan of these homes exhibit characteristics of both styles, sometimes as a hybrid. As a builder, Nelson apparently liked to experiment; nevertheless, according to his daughter, he also had a reputation for methodical quality work.
