The cornerstone is to the right side at the front of the building and is, unfortunately, suffering from some damage.

The Assembly Rooms were built for the village by Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson of Charlton House in 1880-1881 and were opened by the Dowager Lady Wilson. The building was originally managed by the Rector of St Luke's, with all profits donated to charity. Seating up to 200, with a small stage and back rooks, the Assembly Rooms were used for a wide variety of entertainment, social and village events.

In December 1940, during the Second World War, the building was used by Siemens for war production work until the roof was badly damaged by enemy bombing. Repairs were completed and the building re-opened in October 1954.
