Die Höhle entstand, als vor etwa 3.000 bis 4.500 Jahren der Montaña Corona eine gewaltige Eruption hatte. Ein riesiger Lavastrom floss dabei über das neu entstandene Land Malpais de la Corona, die schnellere Abkühlung der Lava an der Oberfläche sorgte für diese Röhrenbildung. Lange floss die Lava unter der erstarrten Oberfläche weiter und hinterließ eine lange Höhle, als sie versiegte. An etwa 20 Stellen brach die Decke ein und bildete an den Bruchstellen die so genannten Jameos, bis zu 20 Meter tiefe Schächte. Die Cueva de los Verdes ist nur ein Teil dieses insgesamt sieben Kilometer langen Höhlensystems. Es ist einer der längsten Lavatunnel der Erde, der am Montaña Corona beginnt, und an der Küste unterhalb der Wasseroberfläche in etwa 50 Metern Tiefe endet. Große Teile sind noch immer unerforscht, weniger als 50 Prozent sind zugänglich. In früheren Jahrhunderten suchten hier die Lanzaroteños Schutz vor Piraten.
