Raised above the surrounding ground and accessed by four stone steps this Victorian Bandstand is in excellent condition considering its age. The performing platform is surrouinded by wrought iron railings and the pattern is repeated on the handrails either side of the steps. There is a rather poor outer railing of typical 1950s vintage. A lot of the scroll work around the top of the bandstand is wrought iron but that above the roof line is cast, whilst the roof is metal sheeting, scalloped and riveted at the joins. The scroll work at the top of the roof needs some attention.
In 1997 the bandstand was restored to its former glory, with most of the original features being retained, and was repainted in its original colour. Since then there has been considerable weathering and some rust patches have appeared.
Just how many of this pattern of bandstand were produced for councils around the country? and how many are still fulfilling their original function? mmmmm.....
