The lighthouse stands on a headland just to the north east of Hartlepool. It is a classical round, white column with the light on top. The nearby signage indicates that there has been a light here since 1847 with the current lighthouse being built in 1926. The original battery was demolished in 1915 to give the battery, located here, a clear view of the horizon.
The characteristic of the light, shown on British charts is: Fl(2) 10s 19m 19M. To the layman that means the light flashes twice every 10 seconds; the light is 19m high and has a range of 19 miles.
