HMS Lapwing was built by Scotts
Shipbuilding and Engineering of Greenock, and launched on 16th July
1943. On 20th March 1945 HMS Lapwing was escorting part of the
Russian Convoy when she was attacked by U-968. Hit amidships she sank within 20
minutes with the loss of 158 lives. 61 men were rescued.
The memorial is in a small garden of rest near to St Mary’s
Church, Saffron Walden. The memorial takes the form of a black marble
gravestone, inscribed in gold. The inscription reads
