The CATHEDRAL OF THE MADELEINE (open 9-6) weekdays; 6:30 A,N, - 7 P.M Sun.), NE corner E. South Temple and B Sts., a Roman Catholic edifice of brownish –gray sandstone in the Roman Gothic styles, was built in 1900. Its ornate twin towers, decorated with gargoyles and inhabited by birds, are a landmark on the Salt Lake skyline. Its full-toned bells ring frequently in a course of the day. A large rose window in the façade sheds a dim light into the nave, and decorated columns reach upward in the interior to vaulted arches high above. The Cathedral of the Madeleine is a Roman Catholic church in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. It was completed in 1909, and currently serves as the cathedral, or mother church, of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. It is the only cathedral in the U.S. under the patronage of St. Mary Madeleine.
The cathedral was built under the direction of the Lawrence Scanlan, first bishop of Salt Lake. It was designed by architects Carl M. Newhausen and Bernard O. Mecklenburg. The outside is predominantly a Neo-Romanesque design, while the inside tends more toward the Neo-Gothic. Construction began in 1900 and was completed in 1909. It was dedicated by Cardinal Archbishop James Gibbons of Baltimore.
