Under Communist regime in former Czechoslovakia the Valdice prison was a known destination for many political prisoners, priests, intellectuals and poets. It was also known for its brutal and violent guards. The prison was established in 1856 in a former monastery. The life-size monument, located on the outside of the prison, portrays a prisoner with a rope around his neck and a barking dog in front of him. The pedestal is in the shape of a five-pointed star. The monument was cast in a foundry in Horni Kalna and was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Justice. The author of the statue, Jiri Sozansky, wanted to contribute by acknowledging the harm to political prisoners.
