Situado na Rua de Santa Catarina, 112, o café Majestic está ligado à história do Porto dos anos vinte e à tradição dos encontros nos cafés, onde políticos, escritores e intelectuais se reuniam com tempo para o debate de ideias. O luxuoso Majestic abriu as portas em 17 de Dezembro de 1921 com o nome de Elite, mas logo no ano seguinte seria rebaptizado de Majestic, nome que conservou até hoje. Foi seu arquitecto João Queirós, que criou uma requintada atmosfera de café chic, ao gosto parisiense da época. Verdadeiro exemplo de café tertúlia, nele se reunia a intelectualidade portuguesa e tantas outras personalidades que contribuíram para o prestígio de Portugal.
A partir dos anos 60, a transformação do ritmo de vida provocou o declínio destes estabelecimentos e o Majestic não escapou à decadência. Porém, a sua beleza original e o seu significado na cidade do Porto, valeram-lhe a classificação de "imóvel de interesse público" e "património cultural". Assim, em 1994 reabriu com todo o seu antigo esplendor, mantendo o traçado original Arte Nova nos magníficos espelhos de cristal de Antuérpia, no chão coberto de mármore indiano, nos bonitos lustres e em todos os pormenores da sua requintada decoração, a que não falta um piano e um jardim de Inverno, convidando a reviver a fascinante "Belle-Époque.
É neste ambiente requintado, animado com recitais de poesia, concertos de piano, exposições de pintura, lançamentos de livros, que o Café Majestic aguarda a sua visita.

Number 112 Rua de Santa Catarina is home to the café Majestic. The café is connected to the history of the Porto of the twenties and the tradition of café discussions where politicians, writers and intellectuals would meet and find the time to discuss ideas. The luxurious establishment opened for business on 17th December 1921 under the name Elite. However, the following year it was rebaptised the Majestic, a name it has since maintained. It was its architect João Queirós who created the refined atmosphere of a chic café, in keeping with Parisian styles of those times. A true example of the café-cum-talking shop, this was where the intellectual elite, and so many others who contributed to the artistic and cultural heritage of Portugal.
As from the 60s, changes in the patterns of life meant the decline of such establishments and the Majestic proved unable to escape the trend. However, its original beauty and significance to the city of Porto gained it classification as "property of public interest" and "cultural heritage". Hence, in 1994 it reopened in all its former splendour with its original Art Nouveau design of Antwerp crystal, the floor in Indian marble and all its lovely finishings and fine detail of its decoration. Naturally, there is a piano and a Winter garden inviting you to relive that fascinating "Belle-Époque".
