David Berry (1795-1889) was an agriculturist & land owner in the Berry district. He left an estate valued at £1,250,000. During his life he was known for his generosity of spirit. He cared for his tenants, built schools for their children, introduced share farming & was concerned for the welfare of the local aborigines. He had an interest in science & experimented with paddle & screw propeller design, had two ships built along with extensive farm buildings & wharves. At the time of his death he had set aside funds for 3 churches. His funeral was conducted by local Church of England, Presbyterian and Methodist clergymen. His estate still exists to this day at Coolangatta & the township of Berry bears his name.
The memorial clearly demonstrates the respect for which he was held. The front of the memorial states: This memorial was erected by the Tenants and Friends of the late David Berry in remembrance of a kind and considerate landlord and true friend of the people.
The other three sides have inscribed the following: Arrived in the Colony 1836.
Born Fifeshire, Scotland 29 December 1795, Died Coolangatta 23 December 1889.
Unveiled by Mrs. John Hay of Coolangatta, 24th November 1897.
