The Connecticut Audubon Society’s Coastal Center is an 8.4-acre Wildlife Refuge and Bird Sanctuary adjacent to the 840 acre Wheeler Salt Marsh at Milford Point. The center provides access to Long Island Sound’s tidal salt marshes, coastal dunes, tide pools and sandy beaches. The nature center has educational exhibits, live animals and program activity space. The building contains an indoor observation area overlooking the salt marsh. From this large room, visitors may use a permanently installed pair of powerful spotting scopes to view the abundant bird-life that inhabit the marsh. There is a staircase leading up two stores to an observation platform near the roof of the building. A wide variety of waterfowl use this area during migration as well as for nesting. An active osprey platform is in the marsh a few hundred yards from the north of the building.

A trail passes through the fragile dunes to a beach on Long Island Sound where one may encounter many shorebirds both during migration and year around. The area provides nesting habitat to the endangered piping plover and least tern.
