Baltzer Lookout is accessible on foot or bicycle after reaching a locked gate on the Ridgewell Road about 1.5km in from the Great Western Highway west of the Blackheath shops. It is about another 3.5km from the gate to the lookout.
Caution is necessary at this lookout as it is not fenced and sheer drops of over 100m exist.
Baltzer Lookout overlooks the upper Grose Valley with views of Mt Banks on the northern side of the valley through to the headwaters of the Grose River in the west. The wild nature of the Grose Valley is very evident in the views obtained.
Just below the lookout is Hanging Rock which features in some publications such as Colley and Gold; "Blue Mountains World Heritage"; Colong Foundation for Wilderness 2004. A view taken between Hanging Rock and Baltzer lookout adorns the dustcover of this book with the same image on page 85. Hanging Rock itself is seen on page 117. A number of film sequences in the film "The Edge" (screened regularly at "The Edge Cinema" at Katoomba) were also taken at this locality.
Hanging Rock also sees use as a spectacular overhanging abseil point.
