Millenium Greens were created as part of the millennium celebrations in the UK. The millennium commission provided funding for towns and cities to develop open areas for the benefit of the local community.

This green is located very near to a place where Charles Darwin stayed at the time that his book, ‘The Origin of Species’ was published. He also used the spa facilities at another nearby building to try and improve his ill health.

Darwin was chosen as one of the main themes for the green and this sculpture marks the entrance to the car park.

The sculpture is a round metal plaque mounted on a piece of stone, and stands about 3 feet high.

The inscription on the plaques reads:
1809 – 1882 Charles Darwin

The inscription on the stone reads:
Darwin Gardens Millenium Green
