The maze has a theme of progression through time from pre-history to modern day.

The town of Ilkley is in a valley next to the River Wharfe. However the moors above the town have symbols carved in stones that indicate that people have lived in the area for a thousand years and probably used the moors as a trade route.

One of the symbols on the moor is a fylfot, similar to a swastika, but free flowing rather than drawn in straight lines. This symbol has been used as the basis of the maze and repeats itself throughout the design.

The people of Ilkley had wanted a permanent celebration of the millennium, and had originally hoped to get help with the funding from the local council. When this was not forthcoming they came up with the idea of using sponsors to pay for the stones that would form the shape of the maze. Most of the stones are sponsored by local people and simply have a number so that they can find their own stone. Others were sponsored by the council and local businesses and are slightly more elaborate.

The start of the maze is a standing stone with some of the symbols from the moors carved on it. The end point is another stone carved in the shape of an old Saxon cross. Although this is an old design, it represents a progression from the earlier time and on to the introduction of Christianity to the area.

The maze is in a small public park on the edge of both the tow and the moor and has free parking.
