In honor of the "founding father" of Salt Lake's convention and tourism business, as well as Utah's proactive economic development efforts, the Salt Lake County Council voted to officially change the name of the Salt Palace Convention Center to the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center in the fall of 2007.
The Man:
Calvin L. Rampton was a man known for his tireless efforts to put the Beehive State on the map as a leader in business, education and tourism during his 12 years in office. Rampton, who served three terms as governor from 1965 to 1977, launched the state's first bid to host the Olympics, decades before Utah was awarded the 2002 Winter Games, as a way to help the then-struggling ski industry. His name now graces the front of the newly renamed Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center.
Rampton, who died in 2007 at age 93, was a wildly popular Democrat. He was honored May 19, 2009 at a ceremonial unveiling of a new sign bearing his name at the convention center and remembered by local officials and family members.
The Convention Center:
The Calvin L. Rampton Convention Center is nestled in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the Salt Palace
Convention Center is the perfect place for meetings of any size or occasion.
