When Washington DC became too busy, Thomas Jefferson escaped to Monticello. When Monticello became too crowded, he then retreated to this 4000+ acre Poplar Forest plantation.
The octagonal shape house was designed by Thomas Jefferson with features of his own liking (and some common with Monticello): skylight, alcove bed, large windows, terrace deck (which could collect rainwater).
The house passed through hands of his grandson, Francis Eppes, and others until a non-profit foundation was created for its restoration and preservation. Poplar Forest is open to the public from March 15 through December 30 (closed on Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) from 10am to 5pm. And then winter weekends from January 18 to March 9 during 10am to 4pm. Admission for the house tour is now $15 for adults.
