To speed up traffic flow on the bridge, tolls are only collected on the southbound, into San Francisco, direction of the bridge. The toll station is at the south end of the bridge. What used to be toll booths in the northbound direction are now pass through islands. The toll bridge clock can be seen by cars traveling in either direction. Over thirty-thousand cars cross the Golden Gate Bridge daily.
The full story and picture of the replacement of the old toll booth clock is told at the GG Bridge Highway & Transportation District website.
The FasTrak™ (automatic payment device in cars)
project (2000-2005) required modifications to the toll booth canopy, including the removal of the
“Stop – Pay Toll” sign. The toll canopy roof was replaced in 2003 and the 1949 neon clock, which
had ceased functioning was not repairable, and was replaced with a replica.
