The Norman Picot de Say had the castle at clun built in this commanding position in around 1099.
The castle was built close to the junction of the rivers Clun and Usk in the turbulent boarder area between England and Wales known as the marches.
To begin with a large motte with two baileys was created. The motte was connected to the baileys by way of causeways.
Sometime in the 12th century the motte was surrounded by a curtain wall, with a twin-turreted gateway. The 80ft great tower was erected on the northern slope of the motte and had to be cut down deep to reach the firm foundations of the natural ground.
Buttressed at the corners the great tower stood three storeys high with a basement, the three top floors of the tower were provided with windows.
Although derelict the tower still stands.
The castle is now in the care of English Heritage.
