A Lak Mueang or 'City Pillar Shrine' is a public shrine, usually in the shape of a pillar, which represents the tutelary diety of each province of Thailand. The pillar is housed in a structure, which often reflects the historical background of the province. Each Shrine has great religious, social, and political importance, and are held in high regard by the local inhabitants. Most Thai provinces have an official Shrine, and some districts within a province have their own, smaller shrine.
Rachaburi is a small town, and capital of the province of the same name, ~80kms west of Bangkok. A quiet area of farms and light industry. The Shrine for this province is found in the capital, near the city centre.
The Shrine is situated in the grounds of the Phanurangsi Ratchaburi Engineering Military Camp, however, access is unrestricted. From what I can gather it is the old city pillar built in the reign of King Rama II. There seem to be two pillars, one smaller, behind the main pillar, both in the shrine. The interior of the Shrine is very attractive with low relief artwork (in gallery). There are also several plaques in the Shrine interior (in gallery).
