King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 ( reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).
The town of Ratchaburi, capital of the province of the same name, lies 80kms or so west of Bangkok, a province of rice farmers and light industry—few tourists ever grace its quiet streets. Near the centre of this pleasant, small town, is the government precinct, which amongst other worthy attractions has a provincial hall, outside of which is a statue of King Chulalongkorn. The king stands on a high plinth, and is depicted in western military dress. In something of a departure from the norm, both his hands, not only his left, rest on his sword. As with most statues in Thailand, this is also a shrine. Locals do come by to pay their respects.
