Upon leaving Kentucky, Thomas Lincoln brought his family - which included a 7-year-old Abraham Lincoln - to this location in Indiana. Here a young Abe learned about frontier life from the hard work his father endured as a carpenter and farmer to the death of his mother and sister. The lessons learned here and on the nearby Ohio River, the now 21-year-old Abraham Lincoln took with him when his father moved the family to Illinois.
Visitors to the site are greeted by the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Memorial and Visitor's Center. This semi-circular building displays 5 bas-relief panels of Abraham Lincoln's life, including his time at this location.
Inside the Visitor's Center, visitors must pay the $3.00 per person or $5.00 per family park fee to enter the site. While here, visitors can watch a 15-minute interpretive video scheduled at the top and bottom of the hour and explore the artifacts and artwork about Abraham Lincoln and his life.
Outside, visitors can walk to the Pioneer Cemetery where Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hicks Lincoln is buried and then onward to the cabin site. The actual site, excavated in 1933, is protected by a short wall and displays a bronzed replica of Thomas Lincoln's cabin. Just on the other side of the trail, a re-creation of a typical pioneer farmstead provides a living history (from mid-April to September) to teach visitors how Thomas Lincoln's family lived and worked in the early 1800s.
Down the trail and across a road (CAUTION: this is a public highway, please look both ways before crossing and again upon your return), visitors can find the spring where the Lincoln family drew its water - an essential element to a family farm.
