Wansford Bridge is a Grade I Listed feature from 25th September 1951. The A1 or Great North Road used to cross the River Nene over Wansford Bridge here. Today the A1 is further to the east with the major junction of the A47 to the north - the bypass was built in 1929.
There are twelve arches making up the bridge and different sections date to various times. The northernmost arches being from 1577, then 1674 and 1672. It is constructed of limestone blocks and has V-shaped cutwaters. Before this bridge there was a wooden one damaged in floods during 1571. The date 1795 also is relevant to when the arches were reduced from twelve to ten after ice and flood damage.
