The Edgeworth Female Seminary was founded by Governor John Motley Morehead in 1840, it offered collegiate courses after 1845. The seminary closed during the Civil War and reopened in 1868. It burned down in 1872 and was not reopened.
The school was located very close to present day Greensboro College, which was at the time another female college.
