The sad brown eyes on “Sentinel” say he’d rather be on one of the surrounding wooded trails than greeting guests inside this nature center. His base says “122 animals and 178 plants” and “On the trail with Lewis and Clark,” and he is decorated with birds and flowers of the surrounding forests and prairie land. He is a 5’ tall fiberglass portrayal of Seaman, Meriwether Lewis’ Newfoundland that accompanied the party on their exploration over a century ago. Sentinel of the Prairie was expertly decorated by Deb Gengler Copple and sponsored by the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center located on Sioux River Road. He is just inside the door and can be seen from the outside when the center is closed.
