St Mary's Island was originally a marshy area to the north of Chatham Dockyard. It had many uses over the years: brickfields, prison, a place to bury the bodies of the prisoners of war held captive on the prison hulks (boats) in the River Medway, a place to change the reactor cores of the Royal Navy's submarines, a nuclear waste dump and now, after removing 1,300,000 tonnes of contaminated soil, a housing estate.
A time capsule buried to commemorate the first people to live on St Mary's Island. This is located adjacent to the bridge that takes on to the island and next to the docks.
The time capsule was buried om 13 December 1996, and is to be left for future generations to find and open. There is no scheduled date for this to be opened.
The plaque is inscribed
"A time capsule was buried on this spot in the presence of the worshipful the mayor of Gillingham, chancellor Diana Smith to commemorate the first family to live on St Mary's Island
Alan Seares, Deborah Vaughn and Michael
December 13 1996"
