This Iowa Welcome Center is part of the Harrison County Historical Village. It has a large selection of state travel information, maps, and brochures. The gift shop offers local food and beverage items, clothing, handmade crafts and Iowa souvenirs. Their traditional cherry drink which has been made here since the 1930’s is available for sampling. Be sure to ask to see the short video on the Loess Hills and the Lincoln Highway.
Outside there are a variety of pioneer buildings: schoolhouse, country store, doctor’s office, blacksmith shop, and jail each with displays of artifacts from bygone days. Recent expansion includes a new Lincoln Highway/Loess Hills Interpretive Center, a 30-seat indoor audio-visual auditorium, a one mile restored prairie trail, observation deck, children’s play area, and outdoor demonstration area. It is wheelchair accessible.
The Welcome Center is open 9-5 every day except New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. While there is a small admission charged for the adjoining historical village, the Iowa Welcome Center is free.
