The railway station of Stein (AG) adds the neighboring German town Bad Säckingen to its name, but this is neither the official name of the town nor does this stations serve Bad Säckingen which has its own railway station. This is only to differentiate it from another Swiss town called Stein (SH).

The railway line was built in 1875 and extended to double track in 1895. In 1926 it was electrified.

In 1991 a fuel loaded freight train ran off the rails in this station, causing a major fire. Nobody was killed or injured but it is considered as one of the major Swiss freight train incidents in the recent decades.

Stein-Säckingen is a stop of the line S1 of the Basel commuter train system. There is one train to and from Basel every 30 minutes. The line splits here and the trains go alternating to Frick or Laufenburg once an hour. Additionally there is one InterRegio train of the Basel-Zürich line every hour.

There are several dozen freight trains passing this station as well, but I could not find any numbers.
