Penny Hill Farm is still a working farm at the head of the Eskdale valley. Once owned by Beatrix Potter who bought it for the National Trust. Not a typical National Trust venue for public to wander round.

There is a a holiday cottage for hire at the farm, which is an upland farm mainly stocking rough fell sheep. Being an ex Potter farm there will no doubt be a clause stipulating Herdwick sheep be kept. Penny Hill Farm is a popular waypoint on many walks.
