The house was built in 1883 by Dr. John Strentzel, Muir's father-in-law. Muir and his wife Louisa didn't live in the house until after Strentzel's death. Muir passed away in the house in 1914. Entrance to the house and the land around it is $3. The house has many rooms (3 floors)The grounds also has an adobe and a carriage house.
