The village of Little Hayhoe is expecting a visit by the Prime Minister to celebrate the village’s near total employment record. Everyone is excited about the visit except Dan Dance a local lay about. In order to avoid embarrassment the parish council places Dan in the local almshouses as a pensioner. The plan backfires when the new vicar works out that the parish council has been diverting the money due to the almshouse pensioners to other good causes. The vicar insists that Dan gets what he is legally entitled to. Dan now has more cash than he knows what to do with and starts treating the locals to drinks. Fearing this might get the village a bad reputation, the parish council try to force some vagrants to become pensioners and dissipate some of Dan’s cash. Fortunately Dan is aware of his rights and protests that any new pensioners must be agreed by him. In a shrewd move Dan decides, with three of his friends to stand for election in the imminent parish council elections. This they do and win decisively. By the end of the film a compromise has been reached. Dan is given a job in a local mattress factory – testing beds all day!
