The Taoyuan station for the Taiwan High Speed Rail is the thrid station from Taipei station to the north and fifth station from Zuoying to the south. The high speed train began service January 5, 2007 and can travel up to 186 mph. The train and stations service over 100,000 passengers per day. The first 15.8 km (9.8 mi) of the THSR line was part of the Taipei Railway Underground project, which aimed to replace surface railway facilities in downtown Taipei with tunnels and multi-level stations. Construction of the system took more than 2,000 professional engineers from 20 countries and over 20,000 foreign and domestic workers six years to complete.
