A memorial to the
Striking 6th
sits at the top of the Memorial Pathway in
Quantico National Cemetery
. Under the 'Sword and Six' plaque embedded in the concrete at the head of the memorial, a time capsule was placed by the 6th Marine Division to be opened on April 1, 2045.
The 6th Marines distinguished themselves at the Battle of Okinawa in WW II and earned the Presidential Unit Citation for their actions. April 1, 2045 is the 100th anniversary of the Sixth's landing on Okinawa.
According to the 6th Marine Division's official website
, the time capsule is to contain artifacts, documents, microfiche, and photographs.
