When initially settled, the town was called Fairview, then Manila, and finally Elwood. The lush, green, wild grassy area was initially used for cattle ranching. Poor range management led to overgrazing and the invasion of sagebrush. Then the settlers turned to farming, removing the sagebrush and irrigating the fields. Poor land management and overwatering led to leaching of alkali and rendered the land unusable for farming. Only through great effort and expense was the excess water drained and the alkali removed from the soils in order for farming to resume.
