The Charlotte Motor Speedway was originally built by O. Bruton Smith and NASCAR Driver Curtis Turner. The Speedway was built in 1959 and held its first race on June 19, 1960. In 1961 the speedway fell into Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was reorganized by wealthy furniture magnet Richard Howard. Howard quickly lead the speedway into recovery, turning it into one of the most popular destinations on the NASCAR Schedule. In 1975, Bruton Smith, who had been quietly buying stock in the speedway emerged as the majority stockholder and once again took control of the speedway. Smith hired H. A. “Humpy” Wheeler as the speedways general manager. Under Wheeler’s management the speedway added Condo’s , The Speedway Club located in the Smith Tower. The Smith Tower houses the speedway’s ticket and corporate offices along with and exclusive dining and entertainment facility. During this time Wheeler also added thousands of additional seats increasing capacity to almost 135,000. For several years the Speedway bore the name of Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but when the Lowe’s sponsorship contract expired at the end of 2010, it was not renewed and the facility is once again knows as the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The entire facility also features the Charlotte Dirt Track where the World of Outlaws holds events and the ZMAX Dragway.
The coordinates for this waymark were taken at Legends Court at the Speedway Main Entrance, which is in front of the Smith Tower.
