This bridge is near the site of the original Roman bridge. The River Ouse is susceptible to flooding and in 1564 floods swept away part of the bridge that was there at that time. In 1565 the bridge was repaired with a central arch spanning 81 feet, the largest in England at that time.
It was dismantled between 1810 and 1818 and the replaced with the current stone bridge which was completed in 1821. When it first opened it was originally a toll bridge to allow the building costs to be recouped.
There are a number of buildings very close to this bridge, and when floods do occur, pictures of this area often appear in the TV news, because they form very dramatic pictures of the extent of the floods.
