Located in the historic center of the Alhambra (Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the High Castle or the Castle Belvedere, the Church of St. John the Baptist was founded by Cardinal Henry, in 1558, then Archbishop of Lisbon.

This Church was considered a majestic temple for its artistic quality and prominence of their deployment, given lie at 200 meters above the village. On August 21, 1887, suffered a devastating fire, being completely destroyed.
Was slow to rebuild in the same place, the current parish church, and worship only returned in 1910.
Architecture has a very simple lines. However, this temple has three naves, inside, a wonderful high altar of precious wood carvings, polychrome marble bases with artistically carved and inlaid with a distinctive collection of religious art of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of high quality plastic.
The valuable paintings richly framed, some recently restored, is attributed to the painter Bento Coelho da Silveira (1618-1708).
