The combined War Memorial for the County of Kaikoura stands in a grove of trees, near an avenue of whalebones, between the sea and the Esplanade.

The fallen off six different conflicts are remembered on this memorial, set up in a grove of trees between the sea-shore and the Esplanade to the south of the commercial district of Kaikoura.

It is built of grey marble, a four-sided corniced and footed block for the inscriptions surmounted by an obelisk about 3m high, this set up on a four-step plinth made of a white marble, the whole laid around with grey pavings.

Originally set up as a memorial to the fallen of WWI it has been added to to remember those from WWII and, on a brass plaque below the main inscription, those from the South African War. On the face of the top white marble step is a brass plaque commemorating the fallen and those who served in four modern conflicts, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, and South Vietnam. No names are given for these latter conflicts.

The main inscription faces west, towards the Esplanade, and reads:

           County Of Kaikoura
             Roll Of Honour
       A Tribute To The Memory Of
             Those Who Made
          The Supreme Sacrifice
            In The Great War.
              1914 -- 1919.
          And In The World War.

              1939 -- 1945.

           3rd Contingent (Rough Riders)

The roll of honour is inscribed on three sides of the corniced block, the WWI roll on the two sides to north and south, with the WWII roll on the seaward, east, side. The names are:

Private T.Cooke V.C. was born in Kaikoura 5th.July, 1881 and was killed in France 25th.July, 1916. There are several web sites commemorating him and giving his citation.
