A plaque on the building dated 1987 states that this school was built in 1862 and was Ohio's Oldest Active School at that time, having been in operation for 125 years. According to an inscription over the main entrance, the school was originally a high school. Most recently, the building was used as the Canal Winchester Middle School. However, a new middle school opened in 2007-2008, and the building appears to no longer be an active school. It is now the home of the Canal Winchester Education Center for the city's school administrative offices.
Very little information is available on the internet about this historic school. Even the National Register of Historic Places entry is incomplete.
